Seasonal Pool Care in Central Texas
Austin doesn’t have a traditional pool “season” — many of us swim 8-9 months a year. But the maintenance needs shift dramatically. Here’s what to expect.
Winter (December – February)
- Cedar pollen season hits hard in January-February. Your skimmer baskets will fill up fast with yellow pollen.
- Reduce chlorine slightly — lower temps mean less chlorine demand.
- Run your pump at least 6-8 hours a day to prevent stagnation.
- Don’t neglect your pool. Algae loves being ignored over winter.
Spring (March – May)
- Oak pollen and leaf drop — March is brutal for debris. Empty baskets frequently.
- Start increasing chlorine as temps climb.
- Check your equipment after winter — O-rings, gaskets, and seals may have dried out.
- Consider a spring-opening acid wash if you see staining.
Summer (June – September)
- Peak demand. Your pool works hardest in 100°F heat.
- Run your pump 10-12 hours per day minimum.
- Chlorine burns off fast in intense UV — consider stabilizer (CYA) at 30-50 ppm.
- Test chemistry twice a week during heavy use periods.
- Watch for rapid water loss — evaporation can drop levels 1-2 inches per week.
Fall (October – November)
- Live oak leaf drop round two. Keep that net handy.
- Scale back pump run time as temps cool.
- Great time for a filter clean before the holidays.
- If you have a heater, test it before you actually need it.
